About StableHeat
StableHeat’s Roots Started in Frigid Norway
The StableHeat story got its start in 1983 in frigid Norway, where Stephan Irgens pioneered a one-of-a-kind self-regulating heating technology for automobile seats. Low voltage, ultra-thin, and durable, Irgens’s radiant heating solution – STEP Heat – caught the attention of Volvo and Saab where early prototypes were installed in more than 2,000 vehicles. The Norwegian coast guard also used the heating technology to keep its vessels’ cabins warm and decks ice-free.

STEP Heat founder, Stephan Irgens
Irgens continued to refine and improve this game-changing heating solution over decades, evolving it into the modern low-voltage, self-regulating radiant heating platform used today. In 1994 he moved his manufacturing base to St. Louis, MO, and received a patent for an electrically insulated flexible heating element and opened his U.S. manufacturing facility in St. Louis, Missouri. St. Louis is still our home today.
Along the way, the technology has been applied across an unusually wide range of demanding environments – from battery heating for NASA Arctic monitoring equipment to residences, commercial buildings, marine vessels, RVs, snowmelt and de-icing systems, and other specialized applications.
StableHeat was launched in 2024 as part of an acquisition of STEP Heat’s assets, IP, and underlying technology. Since then we have invested in rebuilding, refitting and relaunching the business. We own the name and trademark.
Today StableHeat is a differentiated, patent-protected heating platform supported by two U.S. patents and one European patent.
The technology represents an evolution in the way heat is delivered. Instead of producing heat in one location and then transporting that heat through a building, StableHeat uses an ultra-thin, self-regulating low-voltage heating element to transform floors and other surfaces into broad radiant heating planes.
With more than 30 years of underlying technology behind it, StableHeat today operates as North America’s leading low-voltage radiant heat provider, serving residential, commercial, marine, RV, de-icing and specialty markets.

Some Customer Feedback
“I have completed the installation of the Warmfloor kit. It went in as easy as you said. My wife and the cats love it. The warm floor is great!”
John Finney, OH
“We are very happy with our warm bathroom floor. It is very nice to step out of the shower or tub on to a warm floor. Also our 2 cats find it a very good place to spend much of their day when the weather is cool.”
Greg Putnam, WA
“I am ‘playing’ with the heat, watching it as the outside temperatures vary. Last night it actually went to 74 degrees in the room! Your attention to this has been beyond what anyone could expect. I admire you and your manner of doing business!”
Charlie Yassky, NY
“I would like to let you know that the installation went very smoothly and I found your instructions and the overall installation very good. My clients are still a little skeptical as to the system’s ability, but I think time will tell. Anyway, thank you for your promptness in getting this to me. Everything went just the way it should be. I look forward to further dealings with you in the future.”
Rick March, MT
“Thank you for your assistance over the phone about the burnt voltage regulator. Except for this easy fix, we could not be happier with the units you sent us. The floor has kept a room with 3 weather walls warm even in blizzard conditions at -5oF. I hope to be able to recommend this heating solution to friends working on similar remodeling projects and maybe even a distributor in our area. Congratulations on a wonderful product.”
David Raunig, CT
“The Step Warmfloor product proved to be as easy to work with as you, your colleagues and your website made me believe. With our electricians and our ceramic tile crew checking periodically, I was able to lay it out per your drawings, wire and seal it fairly easily. The crimping tool was the only thing I needed assistance with – my grip is simply not strong enough to complete the crimp. Now that we have moved into our new house, and the external temperatures have dropped into the 5 and 6 degrees, we delight in having warm toes when we walk in our bath or shower.”
Marjorie Goddard, IA
“We wish to thank you for your help and for creating a great product. Your help has been invaluable in aiding us with the installation of your product. We are very glad that you recommended putting one quarter inch cork underlayment on top of the subfloor and under your Step Warmfloor as well as recommending covering the Step Warmfloor with 6 mil plastic before installation of the hardwood flooring. It made the installation of the hardwood flooring much easier. We love the heat created by the Step Warmfloor and we plan on installing more of it in our porches in the future.”
Ed and Sharon Greene, IL
“Two years ago I installed Step Warmfloor in my bathroom. I have been impressed with the results. I am focusing on installing this fine product in my kitchen floor plan. I need to find out which kit(s) will be needed to install your product in the area detailed. I have continued to recommend Step Warmfloor to any and all clients and associates considering a floor rehab or resurfacing and I am quick to point out its advantages.”
John Sluga, IL
“I just installed one of your Step Warmfloor heating systems at a client’s residence in Troy, MI. It passed inspection and was pretty as a picture. If you need a confident installer for your floor you can call Wolverine Electrical Service. Thanks.”
Gregg Whip, MI
“I finished installing my Step Warmfloor heating elements this weekend. I turned them on and they started to heat up the tiles I had laid on top of them. I would like to thank everyone there for all your help and answering all of my questions.”
Gregory Wechter, OH
